HARRY OLDFIELD
In 1998, Harry co-authored, The Dark Side of the Brain: Major discoveries in the Use of Kirlian Photography and Electrocrystal Therapy. This book examines how nature has developed invisible electromagnetic means of communication both between and within organisms (including human beings) to develop and evolve the planet's species, perhaps much faster than Darwin proposed. For many years Oldfield ran an electro-crystal therapy clinic which resulted in remarkable healing results in humans and animals.
Oldfield then combined his knowledge of Western science and computer imaging systems with Eastern concepts such as chakras (energy centres), meridians, and auras, to develop a digital light filter which aids the eye-brain mechanism to see things it would not normally see. Psychic surgeon, Stephen Turoff, the subject of one of the author's other books, was fascinated with Oldfield's biofield imaging system because, 'It's like a cartoon version of the light-patterns I see around people.'

Oldfield also developed the Oldfield Microscope, which stains specimens with light instead of chemicals. This enables the examination of live organisms without the need to kill them. The instrument uses one or more diffraction gratings to select specific frequencies from a white light source, enhancing both resolution and depth of focus.
Following this invention, Oldfield became a Fellow of the Royal Microscopical Society and a Member of the Quekett Microscopical Club, a learned society for the promotion of microscopy. A book about Oldfield, written by Jane and Grant Solomon, (click image on left for ebook) explores his ground-breaking techniques and includes fascinating case histories. The authors have continued Oldfield’s work with the digital light filter. See biofieldimaging.com |
Early work with Kirlian photography
Oldfield’s interest in Kirlian photography started in the 1970s after he saw pictures of the phantom leaf effect from Russia (see images below). This phenomenon seemed to support an idea which had had fascinated him for years, i.e. the idea of morphogenetic fields, the postulated organising templates of energy on which physical molecules are strung. These fields were notoriously difficult to measure and so many scientists doubted their existence.
Kirlian photography was Oldfield’s first insight into the invisible universe of subtle energy. Interestingly, he saw changes in the Kirlian images of hands when someone had a cold or even toothache compared to when they were healthy. Oldfield could even see changes in the Kirlian images happening long before the subject developed a physical problem.
A number of hospitals and doctors showed interest in the diagnostic potential of Kirlian. Oldfield did some interesting work with Dr. Glen Rein, who was working on the biochemical synthesis of cancer cells in a London hospital. Oldfield and Rein, initially examined human breast cancer biopsy specimens and compared them with normal adjacent tissue obtained at the same operation. The intensity of light emitted from the tumour tissues was substantially greater than that obtained from the normal tissue. It looked as if they had found something of true diagnostic interest.
However, the Kirlian images were, at this stage, two-dimensional: 'pictures' on a plate. Oldfield had noticed that subjects being photographed with the Kirlian camera were also transmitting 'signals' when they were in contact with the device. He wanted to achieve three-dimensional energy-field scanning as this would give depth of field and offer quantitative measurements. Oldfield managed to get a circular reference field around subjects such as plants, animals and insects with no problem. Then, when he started to scale it up to human beings, people found it too disconcerting. It was like being plunged into a live ants' nest. This was the effect of the electrostatics all over the body.

Electro-scanning method
However, Oldfield was concerned that if you disturb the very thing you are trying to monitor your observations are invalid. So he took a different tack. By lowering the voltage and upping the frequency, Oldfield was able to obtain a three-dimensional reference field around the body. But the field was invisible and he had to use remote detectors (sensitive oscilloscope probes) to detect it. Later on, Oldfield used sound level devices to measure the sound pressure waves and changes from place to place around the body. He called this the Electro-Scanning Method (ESM).
With ESM Oldfield found seven, energy configuration points on the body and was amazed to be told that these energy centres he had located, coincided with the Chakra system of the East, which Oldfield knew nothing about at the time.
ESM required an initial, normal reference reading to be taken, relative to that person alone. This was taken from a healthy site on the body. In effect, the meter was zeroed on that level, creating the scale for that person. Then readings were taken from other parts of the body, for example the seven chakras, the main organs and so on (see image below). In areas of disease, fluctuations on the meter away from the zero-balance, or norm, were seen.

No matter what the disease, Oldfield found that energy 'imbalance' was involved. In inflammatory conditions there would be a bubbling out or convex effect occurring in the field with a 'plus' reading on the meter. With a debilitating or degenerative disease, a concave effect would occur in the field with a 'minus' reading on the meter. He found that, by taking a number of readings around the body into account, patterns could be recognised and diagnostic information was the result.
Digital light filtering software
At the end of the 1980s, Oldfield went to the United States where he met Dr Richard Gerber (author of Vibrational Medicine, Bear and Co. 1988). Gerber suggested that the ESM system might be computer compatible. He challenged Oldfield to be the first to achieve a computerised, visual, energy-field scanning system and said that if Oldfield did so, he would mention it in his forthcoming book. Oldfield rose to the challenge.
Oldfield believed that there is an invisible energy field which we are able to see with Kirlian techniques. ESM gave him a three-dimensional scanning ability around the body but the visual aspect that he had with the early Kirlian experiments was missing. He was keen to develop a system which gave him visual information without artefacts such as the 'ants' nest' effect.
So, he set about learning as much as he could about computers. With the help of a computer programmer he developed PIP (Polycontrast Interference Photography) - digital light filtering software which he claimed revealed the physical body's energy counterpart, 'the etheric template on which our physical molecules are strung'. He stated that, 'on average, every molecule in the human body is replaced every nine years. Therefore, every one of us is a moving fountain of physical molecules and our molecules are constantly being destroyed and replaced. So what keeps each of us a coherent recognisable form? It could be an organising template of energy: a morphogenetic field.' He claimed that PIP was showing the energy counterpart of living organisms. PIP did not interfere with the subject at all so there could be no criticism of artefact. Instead of using an electrical reference through the body, PIP used a full-spectrum light reference to produce the interference effect.

The person being scanned stood against a monochromatic (usually white) background screen. The picture was taken with a video camera, which acted like an artificial eye. A wire, the artificial optic nerve, connected the camera to a computer, the artificial brain. In effect, it was an instrument which can 'see' the energy field in much the same way as people with gifts of vision. However, Oldfield thought that technology couldn't match the intricacies of the human eye/brain cognitive mechanism, but that future developments in computer efficiency would hopefully bridge some of the gap. PIP came up with a set of numbers from the scan by giving photons a number. In other words it was a digital encoding system. The minutest change in density of photons was recorded and amplified to give the picture seen on the computer screen. PIP software scanned at 50 frames per second, which was a lot of information processing at that time.
Oldfield believed PIP was interacting with the subtle energy field. He used often used an analogy to explain how PIP worked. 'If you look at my hand now, you can see it naked. If I put a glove on it you could still see the actions of my hand and how it behaves. If there were a lump on my finger, under a thin glove you could see the glove slightly stretched and bulging over the lump. Under very thin surgical gloves, you could probably see my fingernails. But you would not actually be seeing my hand. You would be seeing the covering over it. You can think of the light interference patterns as a covering which interferes with the subtle energy-field, making it visible. That's what PIP is looking at. I'm using the light like the glove.'
PIP analysis was all about pattern and colour recognition. Different colours represented different frequencies of energy. Oldfield explained, 'When you are looking at chakra colours on PIP, you are not just seeing one colour, you are seeing a mixture of colours. If a chakra is behaving itself perfectly, one colour will predominate. For instance, the throat chakra has more of a blue hue when it is healthy than when it is not. The same with the base chakra, it will be a dirty muddy brown if there are problems, and red if it is healthy. Also, when red kundalini energy goes elsewhere, that is, it goes to the wrong place at the wrong time, there is a potential danger.'
Oldfield had theories about the energy field and disease, 'I see potentially dangerous distortions in people with diseases such as MS and cancer. For example, a cancer tumour could show up as a high intensity spot. But there are a lot of other factors, which contribute to the diagnosis as to whether this is something seriously pathological. For example, we may see toxic signals from the liver; and distortions over the thymus gland which would indicate that the immune system is involved.'

On the PIP scans above, green suggests more 'balanced' areas - the woman on left has no problems in the stomach area. Red pools suggest there may be a problem - the man on right suffers with an acid stomach.
Electro-crystal therapy
Oldfield wanted to find a way to correct the imbalances he detected with ESM and saw with PIP. He discovered that crystals had been well documented for thousands of years as having natural healing properties. Armed with this knowledge, Oldfield employed an empirical system and found out what did and didn't work. He found that red crystals, such as garnet, were good for the base chakra and, blue crystals, such as lapis lazuli, were effective for the throat.
By combining electromagnetic frequencies for different areas of the body with crystals, Oldfield was able, over some twenty years, to develop a very good understanding of which combinations to use to correct the energetic imbalances associated with disease. He thought, 'I like to use the analogy of the tuning fork. If the human is a Steinway piano we try to tune it to its optimal performance. Electro-Crystal Therapy is a human energy field re-tuning system. It works in conjunction with other therapies, both natural and orthodox.'

The Oldfield Microscope
Armed with his knowledge of energy and 'light interference' Oldfield invented a new microscope device. His patented light microscope provides substantially improved image quality for a wide variety of specimens and also makes possible the observation of living samples that until then could only be viewed as dead specimens.
The Oldfield Microscope uses one or more diffraction gratings to select specific frequencies from a white light source, enhancing both resolution and depth of focus. Thus, many specimens illuminated in this way, reveal substantially more detail than with conventional light microscopes.

Further research with digital light filtering
The PIP system has since been developed into the Biofield Reader (real-time video) and Biofield Imager (still photos) systems. We have continued the work Oldfield began with PIP. See www.biofieldimaging.com As part of our research we have looked to see if we can detect changes in the light on and around people in different states of consciousness. One experiment involved one of the mediums, Diana, from the ground breaking Scole Experiment.
The processed images above (filtered through Biofield Reader software) were captured from real-time video footage as Diana meditated. There were no visible changes to the naked eye, i.e. Diana was visible in the room during the meditation, but the filtered images showed remarkable and unexpected changes (above) in the light on, and around Diana. The position of camera, subject and lighting remained the same throughout the session. A Logitech C920 HD Pro webcam was used. The same software filter was used for the whole session. The software makes visible fine gradations of light which the naked eye cannot normally see.
Silicone-based life forms
The PIP system showed what Oldfield believed are 'Crystal Entities'; a life-form based on (or dependent on) silicon rather than carbon. He suggested the life-form could be millions of years old, going back to when rocks were first formed on Earth. He described them as cohesive, amorphous forms of light energy of unusual wavelengths that the eye is unable to normally see. The image below is a 'grab' from video footage showing a life-force seemingly within a crystal being held in the palm of a hand. Whilst filming the footage below, if Oldfield got too close to the crystal with his camera, interference bands were produced on his video recorder. He thought that the entity may be giving off a force of its own and interacting with his electrical equipment. Interestingly, there seemed to be interference bands across the facet of the crystal, where the unusual light form was situated, before electrical equipment was affected. Click on image below to see video footage to decide for yourself. Footage of various crystals exhibiting unusual light patterns and movement starts at around 1 hour 19 minutes.
