TRANSCRIPT—Evening Post: UFO Sighting from caravan park
26 October 1971 ‘Mummy, Mummy, don’t let the spacemen get us’ Frightened children ran to their mothers saying: “Don’t let the spacemen get us,” when a mysterious boat-shaped object appeared in the sky north of Caddington last night. The object which had green and red flashing lights, was observed for over three hours by a group of 60 people at The Grove caravan site. TV engineer 20-year-old Christopher Robinson, who lives on the caravan site, was the first person to spot the object. “I saw it just after 9pm and thought it was an aeroplane, but then I noticed it was going too fast for a plane and, it cut across the flight paths, which no plane would ever have done. “Then it started moving left and right up and down. “A lot of people came out to watch it and at one stage it looked so near that the kids started shouting with fear. In fact, some of the adults were frightened as well.” Mr Robinson said that the object’s lights changed from very bright red to very bright green. “I know people like Patrick Moore will say it was just an optical phenomenon,” he said. “But you don’t get 60 people watching an optical illusion. I know there was something there and I will be watching again tonight.” Mr Alan Milton, who also lives on The Grove caravan site, watched the object for over an hour through a high-powered telescope. “I was doubtful at first, but soon changed my mind. “The object looked like a small new moon and occasional flashes came from it. It was bobbing about all over the place and must have been pretty large because it was over an inch across on he telescope. “It disappeared at about 1am and nobody has a clue what it was.” Evening Post photographer Keith Dobney got to the caravan site at 11.20pm. Long way away “My first impression was that it was a star, but it was bigger than the other stars in the sky and it was moving. “I took a picture on a one minute exposure which shows that it moved. It was a long way away and it was not something that you could recognise, but there was something there moving around the sky.” A spokesman at Luton Airport said they had no reports of an unidentified flying object last night. Mr Tony Northwood, chairman of Bedfordshire UFO Society, said the sighting sounded “pretty incredible” and the society would investigate it.
